　　The first volume The History of Chinese Literature: The Pre-Qin Period and Western Han and Eastern Han Dynasties makes a deep study on the regular characteristics of the literature in this period, the Songs of Chu, political essays, fu (i.e., poetry in Han Dynasty), historical literature and poetry of Western and Eastern Han Dynasties, thus presenting the whole picture of literature during this period. The second volume The History of Chinese Literature: The Wei，Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties makes a full introduction and deep analysis of the characteristics of prose, rhythmical prose characterized by parallelism and ornateness, and   sentimental or descriptive composition in this period. The third volume The History of Chinese Literature: The Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties  makes a systematic study of the characteristics of the poetry in the Tang Dynasty, and makes a full introduction and detailed analysis of the development history of ancient prose, rhythmical prose characterized by parallelisms,  and   sentimental or descriptive composition in the Tang Dynasty. The fourth volume The History of Chinese Literature: The Song and Yuan Dynasties introduces the distinctive characteristics of the literature in Song and Yuan Dynasties. It introduces the development history of the literature in the Song Dynasty, from the poetry and prose innovation movement, to ci in different stages, and then to prose, rhythmical prose characterized by parallelism and ornateness, and scripts for story-telling. The last volume The History of Chinese Literature: The Ming and Qing Dynasties introduces the literature of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In this period, traditional literary forms such as poetry, ci, prose and rhythmical prose characterized by parallelism continue to develop, but the literary spirit is undergoing profound transformation. The amalgamation and conflicts of Chinese and foreign civilization make the literature of Ming and Qing Dynasties present different temperaments and styles.
