The novel describes the tortuous life of Li Shizhen, the most influential medical scientist in the Chinese medicine history, and his arduous process of compiling the great work Compendium of Materia Medica. Born into a medical family with excellent medical skills, Li Shizhen studied the medicinal materials even more. In order to compile Compendium of Materia Medica, he traveled all over the motherland, went through thousands of difficulties and dangers, and finally fulfilled his long-cherished wish. The novel is written in a concise language, a circuitous plot, rich contents and a wide range of knowledge. Though claimed as a legend, the medicinal materials and medical records involved can be traced, rather than being fictional, which provides a valid mirror of historical facts for lovers of traditional Chinese medicine.
