　　选录自汉至清诗凡数千首(断句亦按一首计算)，分两汉魏晋南北朝、唐代、宋金、元明与清代五卷。每卷之前有专文评述此一段诗歌概况，合之即一部中国五七言简明诗史。作者系有小传，简述其生平及作品内容风貌。注释要在辨析难词，解释典故，说明本事。部分作品后附有星评，评说因诗而异，不拘一格。

　　Thousands of poems from the Han to the Qing dynasties (the punctuated line is counted as one poem) were selected into five volumes, which represent the Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern dynasties, the Tang dynasty, the Song and Jin dynasties, the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and the Qing dynasty respectively. Each volume is preceded by an article commenting on the poems in the corresponding period in general. Thus, the five volumes combined represent a concise history of Chinese poetry with each poem having five or seven Chinese characters. In the book. there is a profile of the creator of each poem, giving a brief account of his/her life and the content and style of his/her works. Annotations serve to explain difficult words, allusions, and the basic facts on which the poem(s) were created. Some of the poems are accompanied by star reviews, which vary from poem to poem.
