　　讲述了1929年，共产党员韩英受党组织的委派来到洪湖彭家墩成立洪湖赤卫队，韩英为了保护乡亲挺身而出被抓。彭霸天抓来韩母，企图以母女之情软化韩英，韩英大义凛然地表达了自己献出生命都不会投降的高尚情操。赤卫队在红军的支持下击毙恶贯满盈的彭霸天救出了韩英和乡亲，一举消灭白极会。洪湖赤卫队在保卫湘鄂西革命根据地红色政权的战斗中屡建功勋。
